Starting my blog, i would like to state the definition of topic that has been under microscope for a while.
The Nobel Peace prize is awarded for the person or organisation that “shall have done the most or the best work for fraternity between nations, for the abolition or reduction of standing armies and for the holding and promotion of peace congresses”.
OPCW is a body of around 5000 inspectors now that have been working for UN for last 15 years. The OPCW came into existence in 1997, when the first 100 nations signed the Chemical Weapons Convention (CWC). Since then the OPCW has worked to oversee and check the implementation of the CWC.
Under the CWC, every signatory nation reports to the OPCW, via their national authority, all production and movements of scheduled chemicals. This is a massive task in its own right, but in addition to this the OPCW maintains a team of inspectors who visit sites to check that reporting is accurate.
Having read that, knowing every job has its hazards (don't underestimate carpel - tunnel shit.. we software engineers are no friends with it) and all the supposed honor this body of work must be getting in visiting each country should make one ponder, how on earth did these "white - collared" job bearing people (Indian categorization i tell you) deserve the noble peace award over that brave little kid from an extremely repressive country who got shot for working towards a much larger cause - education for girls for last 5 years.
Allow my banter one more time and take you to some of the lesser obvious facts and accomplishments of OPCW :
- More than 5,000 inspections later, and after verifying the destruction of over 50,000 tonnes of weapons in the duration of 15 years, the world is significantly safer, thanks to OPCW. #BreakingBad #NaughtyNations
-The OPCW also has to be prepared for the possibility of a Challenge Inspection, under which a signatory nation can demand the inspection of a specific site in another signatory nation, if it has grounds to suspect a violation of the CWC and thanks to Modi-Gandhi political "intra - country" drama, one can realise to what extent OPCW has to make sure not to leave a spek of chemical dust or the "inter - country" politics can be really messy. #NoPlaySchoolChemistryLabSon .
-It goes without saying that, in the middle of a civil war, conditions in Syria are extremely hazardous. And observing of temporary ceasefires so that the inspectors can do their work can be only reassuring to little extent. Working in an active war zone just to make sure that no chemical weapons are used is not a part of 99.99% job profiles (in order to appreciate this abstract mention of job profiles, refer to my sarcasm in the beginning #Whamm)
Concluding this write - up, i would like to mention that i hold Malala Yousafzai no lesser for the commendable work she has been doing, infact she posseses in her the ability to change the ugly face of Pakistan and do what nobody else could for the Women in Pakistan and world on a larger basis but sadly the world media tends to support a story/individual/group for its emotional and tragic connect. Awarding noble peace award to OPCW has only shifted the attention of world to oblivious yet obvious for human safety worldwide achievements of OPCW and to all those thousand faces working for it trying to make world a chemical - weapon free place to live.
I think comparing any two bodies (or one body and aone person), who have done something for the people around them, is kinda being unfair to one of them..
ReplyDeleteHowever, nicely written. I enjoyed reading this post.
And (slightly belated) welcome to blogging!
